Nigeria Parliament Suspends South Africa Engagements Over Anti-Migrant Violence

The decision was announced Friday following renewed concerns about violence targeting African migrants in South Africa.

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s Parliament has suspended official parliamentary visits and engagements with South Africa over continuing attacks against Nigerians and other African migrants.

The decision was announced Friday following renewed concerns about violence targeting African migrants in South Africa.

Nigerian authorities have previously reported that 98 Nigerians have died in mob and hate-related incidents in South Africa since 2022.

The Nigerian National Assembly said it was concerned about the safety and welfare of Nigerians living and conducting business in South Africa.

The parliamentary decision affects official legislative engagements and does not amount to a suspension of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa.

South Africa and Nigeria maintain diplomatic and economic relations despite recurring tensions over the treatment of migrants.

The Nigerian Parliament has not announced when the suspension will be lifted.
