MONROVIA — Several Liberian opposition parties have agreed to establish a steering committee to develop a framework for political cooperation following a two-day opposition roundtable hosted by former President George Weah.
The meeting was held at the Jamaica Resort in Paynesville and brought together representatives of several opposition parties and political figures.
According to reports from the meeting, the proposed steering committee will include two representatives from each participating political party and will be responsible for developing a framework outlining the structure and principles of future cooperation.
The parties have also been reported to be working toward a communiqué outlining areas of common political positions.
The discussions come ahead of Liberia’s 2029 general elections and amid efforts by opposition groups to develop a coordinated political response to the Unity Party-led government.
However, the meeting did not produce a formal opposition coalition or agreement on a presidential candidate for 2029.
A report by The Liberian Investigator said the parties stopped short of deciding on leadership, electoral arrangements or a presidential ticket.
The participation of individual political figures and party representatives also leaves questions about how broadly the decisions will be accepted within the respective parties.
